Ultimate Frisbee

As part of Indicorps' continuing commitment its local community in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, Indicorps is spearheading a long-term effort to build community, sportsmanship, leadership, communal harmony, and the values of constructive teamwork by establishing a low-cost, no-contact, active team sports league.

Ultimate Frisbee was chosen because it is cost-effective, requires constant team work, can be played co-ed, and carries little stigma or pop-culture baggage.

Gujarat suffered a severe series of communal riots in 2002 which reflect deep fragmentation in the social fabric of Gujarat religious and class communities. Indicorps believes that one sustainable way to address social stratification is to create platforms for young children to integrate and work together towards common goals. Part of the mandate for the Ultimate Frisbee program is to bring traditionally separated communities together on a fields where sport and play unites people. As the children get older, we hope that the experience of working and playing with other communities will play a small role in bridging differences and building a sense of camraderie.

Currently, Indicorps is testing Ultimate Frisbee by nurturing a select group of marginalized youth as coaches for city-wide junior league to start in late 2007.

We are always looking for volunteers to help develop the Ultimate Frisbee program, including coaches and people experience with adminstering leagues. The dream is to throw an international Ultimate tournament in India within the next two years.
